Armbar Defense From Top
Stop feeding the armbar and learn the stacked escape for the times your arm gets caught.
How to practice
- Start in guard with partner hunting armbars off your posts. Keep elbows connected to their thighs.
- When they capture your arm, immediately posture, hitchhike your thumb skyward, and stack.
- Practice clearing your head over their legs while stacking, keeping weight on their chest.
- Chain the escape into a pass: as they defend the stack, drag the near leg and settle side control.
- Drill 10 full escape-to-pass sequences per side at slow speed, then five more at pace.
- End with live rounds where the bottom player may only attack your arms and you score by escaping clean.
Coaching cues
Hitchhike the thumb up - it buys you time against the straightened armStack their hips; a folded guard player cannot finish the armbarStep your leg over their face before pulling the arm freeEscape into the pass, not backward into open guard
Common mistakes
- Posting arms straight and stiff-legged inside the guard
- Pulling the trapped arm before stacking and hyper-extending it
- Escaping backward so they keep the position and attack again
