Triangle Defense From Top
Recognize the triangle setup the moment your arm crosses the line, and escape before the legs lock.
How to practice
- Start in guard. Partner shows the triangle setup: controlling your head and arm, shooting the legs.
- The instant your posture breaks and your arm crosses center, answer with posture, the hitchhiker stack, or both.
- Practice the early escape: pull your trapped elbow back inside before their figure-four locks.
- Practice the late defense: stack them onto their shoulders, drive forward, and grind your way to side control.
- Drill the alarm drill - partner fires triangle entries at random during positional rounds and you must answer in under two seconds.
- Finish with live rounds where the bottom player may only attack triangles and you score by escaping or passing.
Coaching cues
Answer early - posture beats the triangle before it locksNever let both knees point the same direction when the arm is trappedStack them when you miss the early escapeBoth arms in or both arms out - never split
Common mistakes
- Ignoring the setup because the lock is not on yet
- Trying to muscle the trapped arm straight back against locked legs
- Stacking without head control and getting your posture re-broken
