Teep Reading and Defense
Learn to read the teep early enough that it never lands clean or stops your pressure.
How to practice
- Partner throws lead and rear teeps at your body at half speed while you track their hip and shoulder cues.
- Defend each teep with distance first: a small step back so it falls short, then return to range before they can kick again.
- Add the block: bring your lead hand down to meet the foot at full extension without reaching forward.
- Partner now mixes teeps at the head, body, and thigh so your read must be honest.
- Drill 3 rounds of 3 minutes, alternating who teeps, while the defender scores one point per clean defense.
- Finish with a recognition round: partner may teep, round-kick, or feint - you must call out which before it lands.
Coaching cues
Watch the hips, not the foot - the hip moves firstMeet the teep at the end of its reach, never at the startHands frame downward, head never drops toward the kickReturn to range instantly after the miss
Common mistakes
- Reaching down for the block before the kick extends
- Backing up two full steps for every teep and losing the round
- Guessing the fake and flinching before the kick actually comes
